The Score HD Satellite Radio Studio
The Score HD is a specialty sports channel that provides sports news, highlights, information and analysis programming along with live event sports coverage. In 2008, The Score underwent a massive system upgrade to its facility in Toronto and Matthew Payne, Director of Broadcast Operations, contracted Applied Electronics to do a total rebuild of their broadcast system to full HD, including its satellite radio studio.
Applied Electronics provided consultation, system design, supply, integration, and commissioning of the entire system.
The new 5,000 sq. ft. HD studio, production control room, audio, and central equipment room (CER) are on the main floor while on the third floor are edit suites, the main CER and master control.
The main production and audio control room features a Studer Vista 5 digital audio mixer, 360 Systems DR600 instant replay sound file player, Sharp LCD displays, and a Crestron control system with touch panel. The system also includes a Tandberg ASI encoder, Extron HD router, Nugget HD player, Wohler digital audio monitors, Marshall 5.6 rackmount monitors, and AVP patch fields. Archiving is done with a Front Porch Digital DIVA system and on-air automation is created with an Avid Sundance Titan system. The edit suites each have two Thomson Grass Valley Aurora editors and two recording areas for reporters. The heart of the system are the numerous Thomson Grass Valley K2 video servers, Aurora Edits, Production SAN edit suites, and a Trinix video router, which all help to improve workflow.
The Score can now ingest, edit and broadcast up to 22 HD feeds at a time, providing content for television, radio, online and mobile applications. It went live-to-air in complete HD on September 3, 2008.
