Applied Electronics Donates to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal

Supporting the Canadian Red Cross to provide vital relief to those impacted by the devastating Fort McMurray wild fires

Mississauga, Ontario – May 10, 2016 – Applied Electronics Limited, a leading Canadian provider of integrated media solutions and professional audio visual, broadcast and data technology, today donated to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal in support of the relief efforts underway to help the displaced residents of Fort McMurray, Alberta.

The wildfire began on May 1, southwest of Fort McMurray, and swept through the city on May 3, destroying over 2,400 homes and buildings in the community.  Ten days later, 229,000 hectares (over 565,000 acres) are destroyed and multiple fires continue to burn through the region, with 1,547 firefighter, 121 helicopters, 194 pieces of heavy equipment, and 28 air tankers battling the fires.  The wildfire has dealt a low blow to a key economic region of the province, and it is approximately 30 kilometres from the Saskatchewan boundary.

Donations to the Canadian Red Cross provide relief for those affected in the form of emergency food, clothing, shelter, personal services, and other necessities to help assist with recovery and resiliency.

“It hits home when we see the devastation that has unfolded over the past 10 days,” says John Stechly, Vice President of Applied Electronics. “We have many employees, customers and industry friends who live in Alberta and are immediately affected by these wild fires. This donation to Red Cross is just one of many ways Applied Electronics will help our fellow Canadians facing this adversity.”

"Our hearts go out to our fellow Albertans who continue to be disrupted in the after-math of these wild fires," says Cheryl Bruley, Western Regional Manager at Applied Electronics. "We can only imagine the physical and emotional toll it has taken on the thousands of adults, children, business owners, pets, and wildlife who have been affected by these events. Albertans are strong and resilient; we will rebuild."

Canadians wishing to make a donation are encouraged to make a financial donation to the Alberta Fires Appeal.

When the Canadian Red Cross launches an emergency appeal, donations made in response to it are used to help communities and countries identified in the appeal to recover from emergencies and disasters by providing immediate assistance and relief.  Once these urgent needs have been met, they may use any remaining funds in and beyond the region to strengthen resilience to future emergencies and disasters or to provide humanitarian aid in the event that new needs arise.
