RED Digital Cinema and Avid Announce Avid DNxHR and Avid DNxHD Codecs Coming To RED’s DSMC2 Line of Cameras
Avid codecs further enhance the superior flexibility and performance of RED WEAPON®, RED SCARLET-W and RED RAVEN™ Cameras
Avid DNxHR™ and Avid DNxHD® recording formats will be supported by the RED DSMC2™ line of cameras. The addition of Avid brings yet another powerful and intuitive workflow option to professionals shooting on WEAPON®, SCARLET–W, and RED RAVEN™.
Avid DNxHR and Avid DNxHD are renowned for their ability to reduce storage and bandwidth requirements, and Avid DNxHD has been accepted by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) as the foundation format for the VC-3 standard. Additonally, they offer seamless direct-to-edit experiences for professionals looking to keep the highest image quality possible while leveraging their investment in Avid in-house production systems.
The Avid DNxHR and Avid DNxHD formats will be added to the already impressive simultaneous recording capability that RED’s DSMC2 cameras currently offer via REDCODE RAW® and Apple ProRes formats. Avid DNxHR and Avid DNxHD will be made available via a free firmware upgrade in mid-2016.

About RED Digital Cinema:
In 2006, RED Digital Cinema began a revolution with the 4K RED ONE® digital camera—altering the future of filmmaking. Two years later, RED broke the mold by debuting a camera that could shoot both cinema and stills with a new DSMC® (Digital Still and Motion Camera) system. This breakthrough allowed the same camera used to shoot features such as “The Hobbit” trilogy and “Gone Girl”—as well as the Emmy-winning “House of Cards”—to also capture covers and editorials for magazines such as “Vogue.” In 2014, RED began providing a broadcast solution that allows shooters to stream live in 4K while recording 6K REDCODE RAW masters. This year, RED debuted the newest member of the RED DRAGON sensor family, the WEAPON® camera. Leveraging the award-winning 6K RED DRAGON® sensor, WEAPON couples cutting edge performance with an arsenal of feature improvements that include cable-free intuitive peripherals, blazing fast data rates, integrated mountings, in-camera 3D LUTs output, simultaneous recording of Apple ProRes and REDCODE RAW, and the option to upgrade to an 8K sensor when available. Boasting amazing color science and dynamic range, the 19 megapixel RED DRAGON sensor continues to reinforce that whether you are a photographer, cinematographer, or broadcaster—RED has you covered.
