TVOntario Davis Studio
Applied Electronics Upgrades TVOntario’s Davis Studio from SDI
to IP-Based Workflow with Ross Acuity Production Switcher
TVOntario (TVO) is a Canadian publicly funded English language educational television station and media organization serving the Canadian province of Ontario for over 50 years. TVO’s portfolio of impactful digital learning products, in-depth current affairs, and thought-provoking documentaries deliver powerful moments of learning inside and outside the classroom.
TVO chose Applied Electronics in summer 2018 to help in its transition of the Davis Studio’s production workflow from SDI to IP, moving it from a coaxial cabling infrastructure to CAT 6 for compliance with the newer cabling and transmission standard.
Working in close partnership with Ross Video on this project, Applied Electronics supplied a Ross Acuity IP production switcher solution to TVO for their new IP-ready production control room. Acuity is the top-of-the-line large production switcher designed to handle the most challenging live events. The two production engines implemented in the 8RU frames enable Acuity to eliminate I/O limitations and adds new levels of internal processing power and signal management capability.
Implementing a two-phase approach to TVO’s transition to IP, Applied Electronics commissioned the Ross Acuity into TVO’s existing SDI environment in Phase 1. This enabled the TVO control room production staff to utilize and become familiar with the features of the new production switcher, while the new CAT 6 core cable infrastructure was being implemented. This not only allowed for uninterrupted on-air broadcast of TVO’s programming, but it also permitted the deployment and offline testing of the new IP system. This initial phase would allow TVO to make the switch over to IP when they deemed themselves ready, ensuring a seamless transition.
In Phase 2, Applied Electronics incorporated the Ross Acuity 8RU frame production switcher with a Ross Acuity A4 control panel, as well as a Ross OpenGear frames housing the Ross Raptor Edge IP conversion card for all IP to SDI IO conversions. The Raptor signal processing cards were integrated into a Lawo VSM control environment with an Arista switch fabric.
Applied Electronics collaborated closedly with Ross during the integration and commissioning of the Acuity IP solution in TVO’s production control room, which was completed in summer 2019.
